Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA)

Legislation governing the protection of public drinking water supplies. The SDWA (42 USC 300 et seq.) establishes health-based drinking water standards and source water protection programs, including wellhead protection and sole source aquifer protection programs. The full suite of SDWA regulations promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is available at 40 CFR 141-149.

Regulations Applicable to Energy Development

The Underground Injection Control (UIC) Program requirements of the SDWA are potentially applicable to energy development activities, particularly those activities involving underground disposal or injection of waste water.

  • UIC Program Regulations (40 CFR 144-148)
    Regulations issued by the EPA under the authority of the SDWA to regulate the construction, operation, permitting, and closure of injection wells that place fluids underground for storage or disposal
