Laws and Regulations Applicable to Oil and Gas Production

Federal legal requirements apply to specific activities associated with oil and gas production.

A number of federal laws, regulations, and Executive Orders apply to oil and gas production. For the most part, state laws and regulations do not apply to oil and gas production on tribal lands.

The extent to which the federal requirements will apply to specific oil and gas production on tribal lands depends upon the nature of the project, its location, and its size. In addition, the requirements applicable to projects conducted under a Tribal Energy Resource Agreement (TERA) may be different from those that are applicable to projects developed under other existing regulatory programs.
